Why does IMP perform at a high school?
IMP presents most of its musical theatre events in the theaters of the new Lee High School at 2500 Meridian Street in Huntsville, AL. Our cabaret productions are performed at Amendment XXI at 123 Northside Square in downtown Huntsville.
It is often asked why a community theatre group of IMP's caliber chooses to perform at one of the local high schools. The answer lies in our search for the highest quality productions and our desire to reach out to our community and share that quality.
State-of-the-Art Proscenium Main Stage
The Main Stage Theater has all of the technical amenities that make a professional quality musical production. With a modern and up-to-date fly system, ample stage space, a true orchestra pit, and the latest in lighting technology, it is the home of Huntsville City Schools' Theater and Technical Theater Magnet programs. We are extremely privileged to be able to perform on this great stage while at the same time providing an outlet for magnet students to learn and gain experience.
The Main Stage Theater offers a proscenium stage (a stage area framed by an outer wall which allows the audience to view the action like a painting) and seating of approximately 800 audience members. This size house and proscenium style is comparable to the more popular production venues in New York City. When comparing the other venues that are available to the organization in Huntsville, none match the desirability of the Lee Main Stage Theater for those reasons. Although the Von Braun Center has two production venues, it does not offer a theatrical venue with a mid-range seating capacity for the local community theatre groups that is also a procenium stage.
The Black Box Theater
The Black Box Theater at Lee High School provides just the right intimate and versatile venue for our smaller productions. Located next to the Main Stage Theater, its seats are designed to be moved and set up in different configurations to accommodate any small theatrical setting. This intimacy gives a "cabaret-like" feeling to musical revues such as Ain't Misbehavin' and Smokey Joe's Café.
IMP considers the theatrical works that are produced at the school to be an outreach to the students that are involved. Lee High School houses the performing arts magnet school. One of its goals is the task of educating the magnet students in the theatre arts. How better to do that than in a hands-on educational environment? The Lee High School Magnet students work on each IMP production as technical and production staff. They are taught how to put a show together from the ground up and learn the practical applications for what they are taught in their theatre classrooms by professional and experienced theatre people. Many Lee High graduates have gone on to successful careers in acting and technical theatre.
Given the expense involved in producing quality musical theatre events, cutting production costs plays a big part in maintaining reasonable ticket prices. The cost involved in producing an event at other venues is significantly higher than the cost of performing at Lee High School.
Location and Parking
The new Lee High School is located just 1.5 miles off of I-565 in Northeast Huntsville at 2500 Meridian Street. Please consult Google Maps™ and click on "Directions" () for turn-by-turn directions on how to get to the school from wherever you are.
The ease of getting to the theater is a real benefit to our patrons. Instead of arriving an hour before the show to find parking, patrons can arrive just 15-20 minutes prior to curtain and have no problem finding a parking space. Furthermore, parking is free!
Note: IMP productions are usually performed outside of school hours. Gates 1 and 2 (on Meridian Street) and gate 3 (on Quietdale Drive) are normally closed at that time. Please use gate 4 on Quietdale Drive to enter the parking lot. Both venues are accessible via the courtyard on the north end of the school.
