Independent Musical Productions, inc. will be hosting three costume/sewing workshops led by
IMP's outstanding costume mistress, Julie Hornstein, and by Vivienne Atkins, known in all aspects of
theatre and IMP's artistic director. You may also know Vivienne as the retired Director of Lee
High School's Performing and Fine Arts Magnet for Huntsville City Schools.
Through the years many comments have been heard by people wishing they had learned how to
sew or wanted to know more about how to research for and make a period costume. In addition,
repeated comments were heard about the amazing period hats seen in IMP productions such as
Jekyll & Hyde, Ragtime, Les Misérables, and most recently,
Mary Poppins. IMP wants you to have this opportunity, so the best way to do that was
to just do the workshops. It's a win-win: You will come away with some new skills, and if
you like it enough, you might decide to become part of the IMP volunteer pool.
We are also looking ahead to Alabama's Bicentennial celebration where period costumes will most
certainly be needed. This will help you get a head start on how or what you may need to participate in
this historical celebration.
The workshop schedule and fees are as follows:
- Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm - Costume Sewing Basics (hand and machine): $25
- Saturday, May 6 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm - Period Costumes: $35
- Sunday, May 7 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm - Period Hats: $35
(End times are approximate.)
The cost of the workshops will include all materials except the hat workshop where it is requested that
you bring a hot glue gun if you have one. If you have trim such as flowers, feathers, ribbon, etc. you are
welcome to bring it to adorn your hat.
You may take one workshop or all three. There is a 10% discount for registering to take
two or more.
Classes will be held in the costume workshop at the
IMP Studio at 520 Green Cove Road, Huntsville 35803, inside the
American Precision Products building.
Class space is limited to 10 per session. Recommended for all ages with 12 years old being the
minimum to participate.
